Buy early, activate late
Nothing stops you from buying a travel eSIM days or even weeks before you fly. What matters is when the validity period starts. With most providers, the clock starts at the first connection to a network at your destination, not at purchase. Others start it as soon as the eSIM is installed: the rule is in each plan's terms, and it's what decides the right timing.
The safest timeline
- One to two weeks out: make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, then compare plans for your destination.
- A few days out: buy the plan and install the profile at home on Wi-Fi, as long as validity only starts at the first connection.
- When you land: turn on the eSIM line for data, and turn on data roaming for that line only.
Installing at home means you don't depend on airport Wi-Fi, and you won't be stuck trying to scan a QR code without a second screen.
What about the last minute?
It works: you buy online and the QR code usually arrives within minutes by email or in the provider's app. You just need a connection to download the profile, and a way to display the QR code (another device, or the manual activation details).
Mistakes to avoid
- Deleting the eSIM profile after installing it: a QR code can usually only be used once.
- Buying too far ahead a plan that must be activated within a set window: check the terms.
- Cutting the duration too close: one delayed flight or an extra day on the ground, and the plan expires before you get home.
Picking the duration and data amount
Count the days from departure to return, travel days included, then add a buffer. For data, moderate use (maps, messaging, social media, a bit of video) runs about 0.5 GB a day; at least double that if you stream video or share your connection.
